Television, the Drug of the Nation

Television, the drug of the nation of the United States of America, breeds ignorance and feeds radiation. And here’s the proof.

Found on TwitPic where it was posted by @lookitskris, it shows a screen grab of the morning news broadcast of “Chicago’s very own WGN TV”. I assume the report was about the pay protest launched by security staff after the match in Durban last night.

Notice something amiss in that graphic of “South Africa”?

Perhaps that they have an entire continent labelled as South Africa, and that the continent they are showing is South America! And then they wonder why people stereotype them as ignorant.

Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy said it all in the lyrics of Television, The Drug Of The Nation:

TV is the reason why less than 10 per cent of our nation reads books daily;
Why most people think Central America means Kansas;
Socialism means un-American;
and Apartheid is a new headache remedy.

Television, the drug of the Nation.
Breeding ignorance and feeding radiation.

It’s the perpetuation of the two party system.
Where image takes precedence over wisdom.
Where sound bite politics are served to the fast-food culture.
Where straight teeth in your mouth
are more important than the words that come out of it.

We return to our irregularly programmed schedule
hidden cleverly between heavy breasted beer and car commercials.
Where oxymoronic language like “virtually spotless”, “fresh frozen”,
“light yet filling” and “military intelligence” have become standard.

TV is the place where phrases are redefined like “recession” to “necessary downturn”;
“Crude oil” on a beach to “mousse”;
“Civilian death” to “collateral damages”;
and being killed by your own Army is now called “friendly fire”.

Television, the drug of the Nation.
Breeding ignorance and feeding radiation.

And there I was cheering the USA on at the World Cup, and thinking only good things about Chi-town too! Oh well. Another dream shattered.

  3. Yip, they do seem to get it horribly wrong on occasion. They're not all entirely bad though – we like some of them some of the time. 😉
