Swiss Hotel School Cheese and Wine Tasting
We were invited to join Greg, our Editor in Chief on this blog, at the annual cheese and wine tasting hosted by the Swiss Hotel School last night. The 3rd year Swiss Hotel School students create an annual concept restaurant that operates for a limited one month only. This year, the concept is ‘The Sixties’ and this theme has been rather loosely carried across in the décor with a few black and white photographs on Elvis et al scattered on the walls.
One of Johannesburg’s closely guarded secret gems, The Cheese Gourmet (Cnr 3rd Avenue & 7th Street, Linden. Tel: 011 888 5383) supplied the cheeses, which were paired with Ten Chapters wines.
I know the cheese shop well, but it was my first introduction to the wine label (which I will look out for in future) and I am not sure the pairings were as they should have been. The Havarti / Sauvignon Blanc coupling felt very wrong to me; the wine underwhelmed.
My table companions were a riot, so – when the trainee wine stewards mixed up the positioning of our red wines, making me quite confused – I was not too phased and gave in to enjoying the company. Greg’s best friend was especially funny with his parsimonious system of rating the wines, something I may borrow from now on.
The tasting selection (below) was followed by a buffet dinner (I had a very good chicken curry, my husband had a potato and leek soup) that we were forced to rush through because of babysitter timing constraints.
- Goats Chevre / Chenin Blanc
- Havarti / Sauvignon Blanc
- Ficksberger / Shiraz
- Belegen Mature Gouda / Pinotage
- Gorgonzola / Cabernet Sauvignon
- Sparkling Lekker Rose
All in all a very enjoyable experience and an event we will add to our calendar next year.
