Nokia E71 and E66 Get Full Free Navigation-Ovi Maps Eventually

Nokia E66 and Nokia E71 get full free navigation softwareA good few months after the announcement of “Free Navigation On Your Nokia, Forever”, owners of the big selling E71 and E66 models are now able to download and use version 3.03 of the Nokia/Ovi Maps application. This is the version that allows full turn-by-turn voice guided navigation at no cost.

The Finnish Nokia support site saw an upload of the .sis application file, which was subsequently removed from the download options. This may be due to minor bugs in the application. However, the link to the file on the server is still active (at time of writing) and it works on my E71. (I can’t vouch for the E66 – anyone with one who does try to install and run the application is asked to report their experience below.)

The install process is pretty straightforward:

  1. Download the .sis file:
Direct From Nokia Support site – Right click on the link and “Save as…” OR
Download from 4Shared.com File Sharing site – Click on the “Download Now” button, wait 10 seconds, then click on “Click here to Download this file” link
  2. Connect your phone via PC Suite and run your Nokia PC Suite software (if it doesn’t auto-launch).
  3. Select the “Install Applications” option.
  4. Browse to the location of the .sis file you downloaded earlier and select it.
  5. Click the “Install” arrow to transfer the file to your phone (I installed to “Phone Memory” as opposed to “Memory Card” – not sure if this is relevant).
  6. Complete the installation on your phone directly when prompted.
  7. You have reached your destination!

Just for clarity – I installed the application over the existing version on my mobile. I did not uninstall anything. Also note that this version does not contain options to use the promised Weather, Michelin Guide and Lonely Planet Guides. This may purely a location-based issue (if anyone outside of South Africa runs the application, please confirm this for us), or it may another reason that the file was removed from the public download site.

If you do apply this application, please drop us a note below to tell us how it goes. Remember to mention the model you are using, where you are located, and any issues you discover.

  1. I run Google maps rather. It is much better in integrating web solutions. With lattitude and starred items. If you set your login details it automatically syncs your entire web-based map. You log on and check your places, star them and save your map. When you start the software on your phone, voila, all your stuff is still there.

Almost like Mail for exchange just with maps…..and if you click on the item/place, website, telephone number and email contacts show.

  2. Okay, just picked up the official Nokia Press Release with more details, and official notice that the app can now be downloaded and installed using the official Nokia Maps site:

Nokia E71 and E66 get free navigation

GLOBAL – You spoke, we listened: Free walk and drive navigation is now available for the Nokia E71 and Nokia E66. The latest version of Ovi Maps with free walk and drive navigation has been available on a range of devices such as the Nokia E72, Nokia N97 mini, and X6 since January. After listening to customer feedback though, the Ovi Maps team has created a version that works on Nokia E71 and Nokia E66.

People will be able to use Ovi Suite to side load the latest country maps onto their devices so they can enjoy offline map browsing alongside free navigation. The process of making the latest version of Ovi Maps available for existing devices is quite involved, but the team managed to include complete navigation functionality. Due to technical constraints in back porting the app to existing devices, unfortunately, it wasn't possible to offer further premium content such as Guide Michelin and Lonely Planet guides. These two devices will also be the last of our S60 3.1 and older devices to sport this version of Ovi Maps. But every upcoming Nokia Smartphone will come with free walk and drive navigation out of the box.

These two Eseries devices join the recently compatible Nokia N86 8MP
See below for a full list of compatible devices.

The update is available now from Nokia.com/maps, and will also be available in Ovi Store.

Ovi Maps compatible devices include the Nokia N97, Nokia N97 mini, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition, Nokia E52, Nokia E55, Nokia E72, Nokia 5230, Nokia 6710 Navigator, Nokia 6730 classic, Nokia X6, Nokia N86 8MP and (with slightly different functionality) the Nokia E71, and Nokia E66.
