Coldplay-w640Sweet and swell news doing the rounds today: British rock band Coldplay will visit our sunny shores in October 2011 for (probably) 2 arena concerts, one in Joburg and one in Cape Town.

At least that is what all the rumour and gossip is telling us. You’ve gotta love a good and groovy live concert rumour mill. The promoters and media houses get forced into meeting press release embargoes and the Twitterverse gets to talk all they want.

Should the information turn out to be accurate – and there’s no obvious reason why it won’t, see more hints below – then the concerts in South Africa will be the only true Coldplay concerts for 2011. All their other scheduled 2011 live appearances so far are at Music Festivals.

Coldplay Coming to SA Clues

That embargo is being maintained by Prime Media’s radio outlets until Monday morning. Only then will an announcement about a visit by “one of Englands’ biggest arena bands who are coming to South Africa for the first time” (as hinted at on one of the stations yesterday afternoon) be made. Earlier today, 94.7/KFM radio jock Mark Pilgrim also made a number of not so subtle hints about the announcement.

His ‘clues’ included a suggestion that the band has 4 members (Coldplay do) and that they hail from the United Kingdom (as Coldplay do). The clincher by far though was his suggestion that one of band members has a child named Apple (Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin does with his wife, actress Gwyneth Paltrow).

Coldplay to visit South Africa in October 2011

With that sort of information around, it’s really not surprising that well connected people (connected in the interwebs sense) are again in a position to beat the official information release. Like us.

Dates being suggested are for Cape Town only at this stage, and the two that we’ve picked up are either 05 or 26 October* 2011, both of which are Wednesdays. Could it be that Joburg will see weekend dates around those? We’ll wait and see what news Monday brings, and will add the official concert dates and ticket information to this as soon as it is confirmed.

My suspicions are for earlier in the month rather than later as the band are scheduled to appear at the Rock in Rio festival on 01 October, and could hop across to visit us from there. In the interim though, put a temporary hold on your October plans, and start putting a little money into your “Concert Tickets Saving Fund”.

*(I scratched the 26th date as I realised that that is the date for the rescheduled Kings of Leon concert in Cape Town. So early in October seems to be the way Coldplay will go…)

What are Coldplay like Live?

Well, so long as you are no expecting a U2 360 Degree concert experience again, not bad by many accounts. Here’s another sample of Coldplay in action on stage.

  1. Oh yes baby!!! Awesome news. I love Coldplay. You guys better be right 🙂

  2. guyz am so xcited i can’t wait……………

  3. Mobile Gadgets are running a coldplay competition, can win 2 tickets!

  4. So Durban loses out again!!!!!!

    • Indeed Janet. I don’t think Durban will see another major, large concert for a while. When there’s an indication that the artist will sell-out a 40,000 – 50,000 seater stadium, then maybe. But it’s a huge financial risk to the promoters to put together a Coldplay/U2/Kings of Leon show in Durban, and then not see the tickets and merchandise sell very well.

Sad I agree, cos Moses Mohbida and Durbs are ideal for open-air outdoor concerts in my opinion.
