Another South African Dies in Afghanistan
Update (26 Oct 08 @ 20:05)
Confirmation that the two DHL employees (the head and deputy head of the companys’ Afghanistan branch) were in fact murdered by a security guard stationed outside of their office building. The guard then turned the gun on himself and committed suicide.
From IOL: “One of the security guards that was standing in front of the company opened fire on the chief and deputy of DHL,” interior ministry spokesman Zemarai Bashary told AFP. “After killing those people, he killed himself with one bullet under his chin.” Bashary said police were looking into the background of the guard, employed by an Afghan branch of a British-based security company, to find out what had led him to kill the two.
Sky News and the BBC are reporting that two DHL employees (?tbc?) have been killed in Kabul, Afghanistan together with their local guide. It is believed that they got caught in the middle of a gun battle between rival faction gangs in the capital city, earlier this morning (8:30 am Afghan time).
If this story is confirmed, this will be the second slaying of a British-South African in the divided country in less than a week. Aid worker Gayle Williams was gunned down in the street by Taliban militia. Reports surfaced soon after her shooting that the execution was carried out because she “was preaching Christianity” in the country.
And people think we have problems here?!
