Tjops Home Dining is born

I have always been interested in restaurants. I have often seen myself owning one.

So a couple of months back, over a bottle of wine or two we came up with the plan to open a HOME RESTAURANT. The concept has taken off overseas and is slowly gaining momentum in South Africa.

Most restaurants fail in the first six months. Many of the others fail in the first year. I have noticed one common thread in the ones that last. Honesty…..Honesty in the food, honesty in the venue and most importantly, honesty in the HOST. The best restaurateurs seem to be people who genuinely want their guests to have an enjoyable experience. Not just make money. That is a difficult balance to maintain. So that is why we decided to go the “home” route, that and the fact that people always seem to enjoy themselves at our house. So last week while I was in Tanzania my brave wife and sister in law took on our first corporate function.

Using the guest house as the venue they served a three course Christmas Meal. Everyone seemed very happy with the function. So now we are ready to go public. This Friday night we are open to the public. It works like this…..

We send out an email invitation to our client base. Listing the menu and the date of the next dinner. They then can book their tables by paying for the meal in advance. First come first served as the venue can seat a maximum of 22 people at the moment. We plan on hosting one dinner a month to start with. Hopefully this will grow with demand. The fact that we are not using the restaurant as our primary income source allows us to really create a value for money environment. Serving a welcome drink, three courses and coffee/tea. The intimacy of being at someones house also changes the dynamic of the evening.

We have a number of marketing plans, the main focus is to grow the contact database.

I ask you to please go to our FACEBOOK or TWITTER (@Tjops_Home) page, to join, follow and suggest to your friends. We will be running a competition where you can win free drinks at one of our dinners for suggesting contacts. So tell your friends to mention you….

Our first invite went out this evening, If you are interested in the details see our FACEBOOK page, or send me your email addy for the mailshot.

Thanks guys.

  1. Sounds cool!
Please add me to the invite list. Please also keep in mind vegetarians (me) too when planning the meals or perhaps ask people to let you know in when RSVP if they are one.
