Update: We’ve added a collection of the highlights in video form to a new post. Go see what you missed right here.

Tonight sees the first ever World Cup Kick-Off Celebration Concert at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto! And the broadcast is going out live to world on both television and the ‘net!
Produced for FIFA by Control Room (the same production company that put together global concerts such as Live Earth 2007), the concert features a host of both local and international performers.

The stars that will be performing at the concert are: Alicia Keys, Angelique Kidjo, Amadou & Mariam, the Black Eyed Peas, Blk Jks, Freshlyground, Hugh Masekela, John Legend, Juanes, K’Naan, the Mzansi Youth Choir, Shakira, the Soweto Gospel Choir, The Parlotones, Tinariwen, Vieux Farka Toure and Vusi Mahlasela.

One of the best things about the concert is that all the net proceeds from the event will be donated to the 20 Centres for 2010 campaign, which aims to build 20 centres across Africa offering education and healthcare services, as well as football training to disadvantaged communities.

The concert will be broadcast live locally from 8pm on both SABC1 and DSTV SS3 channels. (South Africa is GMT+2, so 8pm local time is 1pm in New York, 7pm in Brussels, 4am in Tokyo.) We’ll try to get international television details if we can.

The official licensed web stream will be provided by VEVO at the same time: Visit the VEVO World Cup Concert page for links and details.

Despite calls from some local artists’ unions for a boycott of the event, the concert is a complete sell-out, with some 30,000 concert-goers set for the time of their lives tonight! If you’re one of them, note that vuvuzelas have been banned from the concert – you are going to have to make some noise the old-fashioned way.
